After a visit to my physician for a normal check up, I was told that I was pre-diabetic, had hypertension and elevated bad cholesterol levels.. To cure these problems he gave me medicine to regulate my blood pressure and gave me the directive to lose 50-70 pounds. WAIT.ONE. MINUTE…. did this man say I had to lose at LEAST 50 pounds???? What in the entire world???
Ok y’all, I was completely clueless on how I was going to get this done! I told you about all the stuff I tried before to lose weight – that FAILED!!! A major reason for me being over 245 pounds was because I had no idea what to do. I decided that I would study to become a certified Nutrition Specialist. During my initial study, what was so astonishing to me were all the LIES that I had been told as it pertained to obesity and weight loss. I can’t believe I was the only one who was lied to. So, I’m going to share my list of the “TOP 5 WEIGHT LOSS LIES” with you, so you can be armed with the truth. It’s tough out here in these weight loss streets! knowledge is your only weapon!
1. CALORIES CONSUMED AT NIGHT ARE MORE FATTENING THAN THOSE EATEN EARLIER IN THE DAY
This is a lie people! A calorie at 8:00 pm is the same dang calorie at 8:00 am! That’s like saying a pound of feathers weighs less than a pound of nails! Nope, a pound is a pound! As a single mother, there were times when I wouldn’t get home until after 8pm. – after spending the day working, errands, and chauffeuring my kids around. I would feel devastated and guilty thinking that the food I needed to eat for dinner was somehow going to make me fat because I was eating so late at night. When I understood that there was no medical based fact which supported this “rule of eating”, I was elated. Now, I could conduct my life normally without worrying about when I ate. Remember, what’s important is total calorie intake per day not the timing of the meals!
2. BROWN FOODS ARE WHOLE GRAIN FOODS
False! Did you know the sneaky producers of foods realize that many of us are health conscious and we know that whole grains are better for us? So, you know what some of these companies are doing? They use chemicals and dyes to make their rice, breads, cereal and other items appear to be brown in color so that we will buy them. They also use popular “buzz words” on the front of the package like “whole-grain”, “multi-grain”, “high- fiber” and “heart healthy” just to fool us!! How awful is that? Here is the only way you can be assured of not being duped. You must read the nutrition label on the item prior to purchasing. At this particular time, the government only regulates what is put on the nutrition label. In other words, the food manufacturers can make their foods appear anyway they want AND can make any statement that they want on the packaging. HOWEVER, the nutrition labels are regulated and they can’t lie. So, when reading the label, if the first ingredient is not whole grain OR water followed by whole grain, it’s not a whole grain product!! Don’t be fooled!
3. AS LONG AS YOU ARE EATING HEALTHY FOODS YOU DON’T HAVE TO COUNT THE CALORIES
Another evil little lie! I’m sure you have heard the expression “there is no free lunch”. Likewise, there are no free calories. Once you determine how many calories you should be eating per day you need to stick as close to that number as possible. Healthy fats, such as the fats you get from consuming things like avocado, salmon and olive oil are great for you and needed for your body to perform at optimal levels. There have been studies which show that dark chocolate and red wine may serve to improve heart health. But trust me, if you consume these items without factoring in the calories associated with them, it will result extra pounds.
4. FASTING/LIQUID DIETS HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT
This lie makes my heart hurt a little bit. If someone decides they are going to consume liquids only for an extended period will they lose weight? The answer is yes. It will be relatively quick & it will be mostly water, but yes, they will lose weight. Here is the problem. Most will gain it right back, within a week, after resuming their regular eating habits. The fact is the research shows that a steady weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week is the most healthy & sustainable for our bodies. The fact is that their is no medical basis for believing that fasting somehow detoxifies our bodies. Our bodies already have a pretty good detox system …it’s called the liver, kidneys and spleen! (Thank you Baby Jesus) The fact is our bodies need carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats in order for us to have optimal health. Do these liquid diets provide all of that? Most of them do not. Of course, there may need to be more drastic measures taken for the morbidly obese – where medically supervised liquid diets are employed. However, these cases are rare. The fact is food is not the enemy! We just need to learn what to eat and how much! You can lose weight while eating normally. Besides, who wants to spend a lifetime drinking meals?
5. CARBOHYDRATES ARE BAD AND WILL MAKE YOU FAT
Ok..the next time someone says this to you, tell them to take a much needed seat!!!! They do not know what they are talking about. First of all, carbs are a macronutrient that the body requires. Carbohydrates, in the form of fiber, can improve your digestive health and cholesterol levels. Did you know that carbs are the body’s preferred source of immediate energy and the ONLY source of energy for the brain and red blood cells? You just have to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy carbs. Healthy carbs are derived from foods such as fruits, sweet potato, beans legumes and low fat dairy products – just to name a few.
